The Russian women’s national team, the first squad to train at the Picornell

Russia’s women’s national team has been the first to test the waters of the venue of the 33rd LEN European Water Polo Championships Barcelona 2018 this afternoon. The session has taken place at the indoor pool of the Bernat Picornell facilities. The team led by Alexander Gaidukov has been drawn into Group B, with Spain. They will make their debut against Turkey n Saturday ay 5pm.

Russia is one of the heavy favorites to claim the title in the women’s competition. Although their last precedent in this competition can be considered average (6th in Belgrade 2016), they have been able to get on the podium in latest international events: Third at the Rio Olympics and third at the Budapest World Championships.

The Russian squad has claimed three titles in the history of the championships, the latest dating from 2010 (Zagreb).

Kinef Kirishi, current European champion, is the backbone of the national team, with stars including Evgeniya Ryzhkova, Ekaterina Prokofyeva and goalkeeper Anna Karnaukh.
